Das 1972 in Betrieb genommene Radiotelskop im Effelsberger Bachtal hat einen Reflektordurchmesser von 100 m und ist damit das größte vollbewegliche Teleskop Europas. Das Observatorium ist eine Außenstelle des Max-Planck-Instituts für Radioastronomie Bonn und dient vornehmlich der Grundlagenforschung über Fragestellungen zum Ursprung und zur Entwicklung des Universums.
